The sequence of five Theremin-centered concerts from October 16 to 19 began on Friday evening with a trio performance of Benoit Cancoin from Saint Etienne playing double bass, Korhan Erel from Berlin on Electronics and Andrew Levine performing on Theremin+synth (Moog Etherwave Plus & Make Noise 0-Coast) and Haken Audio Continuum Fingerboard.
I had been worried for the last two weeks as Covid-19 numbers were rising all over Europe, France had already entered a lockdown, with Saint Etienne being one of the hotspots and Berlin was in danger of being shuttered as well.

Für den “Schienenzeppelin” ist zusammen mit einer rechtzeitigen Voranmeldung (für die Konzerte um 18:00 und 20:00 Uhr) der Festivalpass der blurred edges gültig.

Bei NōKabuki treffen Korhan Erel, Elektronik-Künstler aus Berlin, Benoit Cancoin, Kontrabassist aus Lyon und Andrew Levine, Theremin+Synth & Continuum-Spieler aus Hamburg erstmals im Centro Sociale (Sternstraße 2, 20357 Hamburg) aufeinander.
Das Theremin, Urahn des Synthesizers trifft auf iPad und Laptop des elektronischen Reduktionisten Korhan Erels. Fundament und Mittler ist der Kontrabass von Benoit Cancoin als rein akustische Quelle von Klängen jeder Couleur. Einem Schattenspiel gleich tasten und tanzen die sechs Hände der drei Musiker auf der Suche nach Harmonie und Dissonanz, Linien und Flächen,… Auf der Suche nach einer gemeinsamen Musik.
Das Konzert im Künstlerhaus FAKTOR (Max-Brauer-Allee 229, 22769 Hamburg) ist Teil von blurred edges – Festival für aktuelle Musik in Hamburg, 16.-29. Oktober 2020.
blurred edges 2020 wird gefördert von der Kulturbehörde der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg und der Hamburgischen Kulturstiftung.
1856 dauerte die erste Fahrt von Berlin nach Hamburg über neun Stunden. 75 Jahre später, am 21. Juni 1931 benötigte der Schienenzeppelin für die 257 km lange Strecke zwischen Hamburg-Bergedorf und dem Lehrter Bahnhof in Berlin nur 98 Minuten. Dabei erreichte er eine Spitzengeschwindigkeit von 230 km/h.
Die neue Musik hat zwar mittlerweile ebenso lange gebraucht um sich ihren Platz im Kulturspektrum zu sichern, aber dafür geht es sukzessive voran. Und auch wenn der Zeppelin 19 Jahre jünger ist als das Theremin hat letzteres noch immer einen Platz auf der Bühne und ist in seiner Faszination ungeschlagen.

The third installment of “box full of waves” took place at Hamburg’s Künstlerhaus FAKTOR on May 24 2020. Featuring Michael Haase (Dan Bao & Zither), Georgia Hoppe (Clarinet, Electronics, Harmonium & Rubber Sax), Andreas Krennerich (Soprano & Baritone Sax), Andrew Levine (Haken Audio Continuum Fingerboard, Theremin+0-Coast) and Manfred Stahnke (Viola).
While in the times of Covid-19 (aka the Corona-virus) regular performances with an audience are out of the question in most of the world, both Hamburg and Berlin allow for streaming concerts to take place. I arranged for two such events at the WorldWideWindow in Berlin. On April 28 I played with the trombonist Davide Piersanti…
…and on April 29 I met up with the tuba player Jack Adler-McKean. It turns out my combination of Haken Audio Continuum and Theremin + MakeNoise 0-Coast synth integrates beautifully with the two brass instruments–plus electronics! Davide employed a series of effects pedals, live and prerecorded loops and Jack had a feedback system in his tuba, so the acoustic and electronic world spanned bridges towards one another from both ends. I can’t wait to meet and play with these wonderful musicians again!
